Now more than ever, since we’ve entered the era of LinkedIn, online personas are extremely important to your professional brand. Some may say that a polished headshot is as key to your professional growth as a well-done cover letter and resume.

Here are some tips for putting your best face forward:

  1. Make sure your headshot is professionally lit.
  2. Keep clothing simple. Mid-tone colors work best. Avoid busy patterns that can distract from your face and avoid whites which tend to wash you out.
  3. Make sure you feel at ease with the photographer you choose. If you are not comfortable, that will translate to the photograph.
  4. Remember to update your headshot whenever your appearance changes substantially. Even if your appearance doesn’t change, it may be a good idea to update your headshot every two to three years as hair and clothing styles change.
  5. And finally, remember to SMILE!
